Apparent drowning in Poipu yesterday

by Michael Levine - The Garden Island

An apparent drowning victim was brought to shore by surfers in Poipu yesterday afternoon before being transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, according to county spokesperson Mary Daubert.

The 60-year-old visitor was pronounced dead at Wilcox Hospital yesterday evening.

Daubert said that the surfers initially found the man about 50 yards offshore near the breakwater, fronting the hotel on the right side.

The man, a resident of San Jose, Calif., was unresponsive when brought to the shoreline fronting the Marriotts Waiohai Beach Club in Poipu.

The man was taken via ambulance to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His identity will be made known after proper notification as will an official cause of death.

Gosh, that is awful. I wonder if he died of a heart attack or from not knowing how to swim in the ocean? You just never know.

That is so true, we never know when it is our turn! Since my husband had his heart attack 10 years ago he is very leary about going out in the ocean now. Trust me you never know, he was very physically fit when his heart attack struck him!

A friend of ours in good physical shape, has a sailboat, and was over at Catalina Island and had a heart attack. Others were there and his lady friend happened to be a nurse so he got prompt care, and the helo took him back to Long Beach. He was lucky.

oops, my bad Kauaieger, jeez I was asleep at the wheel.

I usually check the dates, but that was linked on the Garden Isle news as if it were a current news story, is my only excuse. ;-)

Not sure of the time, but you would have known it when they pulled him out. All of the *bleeping* tourists wouldn't get out of the way as the firefighters and EMTs tried to work on him.

We were wondering if he had a heart attack, since the water in front of the Marriott isn't particularly rough. All we knew was that they were making resuscitation attempts for several minutes on the beach, and were still doing chest compressions on him as they rolled him to the ambulance.

Not what you would expect to happen to you on vacation, but people need to learn that the ocean can turn against you without warning.

The family of the deceased wants additional answers about the drowning. Anything would help them as they are trying to cope and work through this tragedy. He was a 60 year old in great health and a good swimmer. The report called it an accidental drowning as there was not a heart attack or other medical issue. Apparently there are 3 lifeguard stations there. I am in CA helping the family and not familiar with that area. Are drownings common in that area? Is that a safe beach? He was on vacation from CA with his son who was surfing at the time. Any input from over there would be great. The family would like to talk with anyone over there that can help them sort out the facts. Thank you.
