Hi, my wife will be 3 months pregnant when we're in Kauai late September. Is she allowed on any of the helicopter tours or Napali boat cruises?

Suggest that you talk to her professional M.D'S,

Most of us on this board would be well out of our scope of practice to say what is good, or not good for your wife.

Helos, would have far less effect, than smashing into the seas on a boat.

Suggest you talk to her physicians, and also to the boat companies, and even to the helo companies.

A fling on an activity, in my opinon, is NOT worth putting your wife ,or the new baby in danger. Risk vs Reward. why take a chance ?.

Denny

yes, of course we will be talking to our doctor.

I'm not asking for medical advice.. We do have to fly on a plane to get to HI, and that's not a problem. Being in a helicopter or on a boat is no more dangerous than being in a car.

My question is, do helicopter/plane tours and cruises allow pregnant women? None of their websites say they aren't allowed. Some list weight limits but say nothing about pregnancy.

I will ask the companies as well but this is a forum so thought i'd ask if anyone had a similar experience.

Why not ask the tour operators? Its not like she will be showing too much or carrying too much weight. Know women who skiied up until late in their pregnacy but they were very skilled at skiing. I would also consider the state of her stomach, ie motion sickness.

You should certainly alert the operators, but I am confident they will have no problem with it at all. I took a snorkel cruise at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and booked a helicopter/hike glacier tour (which was cancelled for weather) and a dual-prop plane flightseeing tour in New Zealand at 4-5 months pregnant. The only no-nos on that trip were bungy jumping (aw, shucks, if you *insist* I stay on the ground I guess I will) and a jet boat ride (they do 360s and that sort of thing).

Do contact the tour (helicopter, etc) companies directly. I'm sure that their insurance carriers have given them guidelines.

Also -- don't forget to follow your good instincts.

I agree with Denny--please consider all aspects of various trips. Chances are she will be just fine BUT she may be a little more prone to motion sickness especially on the Na Pali cruise and some boat trips can be pretty rough. I would definitely take a largish catamaran around Na Pali as opposed to a small vessel. Those waves, at times, can hit hard and cats ride them more evenly. I would ASSUME that the helicopter trips would be fine but as you've already mentioned, please check with her doctor--a new little one is soooo much more important!

I know that my friend went on a Big Island helicopter tour when she was pregnant (and showing - maybe 2nd trimester?)

Please post what you find because it might be of interest to me. :)

I cannot comment on the heli tour. I tend to get motion sick and when I was regnant with my second one, it just got worse.

But we did end do a boat tour when I was in my 2nd trimester. My oldest son was almost 3 at the time. Yes, I was alittle motion sick but otherwise, I was fine. I chose to sit in the back of the boat and not walk around much. I did not want to take the chance of falling.

I told the boat co. that I was about 3 months along and they gave me a nice area to sit. I was just careful and they were great.

Everyone is different so check with your MD. I even did a lot of hiking during that time I just had to be more careful to not fall.

I would never do a horse back riding tour, though!

Martik,

Do you remember which boat tour you used when you were pregnant?

I found out that Air Ventures plane tours do allow pregnant women. I think they will be the better option, and they are cheaper than a heli tour.

I haven't heard back yet from any boat tours.

We used Blue Charter Boat Charters http://www.kauaiboats.com/

I opted for the sunset Poipu tour because it was shorter and I tended to get motion sickness during my last pregnancy. I was showing, about 5 months and they had no problems with me being on board. The crew was extremely helpful (this was in September 2001). We also had 2 1/2 year old with us.
