2 weeks in Athens

Hi,

We are a couple from Malaysia. Wife is attending research related analysis at U of Georgia and we will be there for 2 weeks (29 Sep - 12 Oct). Any suitable lodging within walking distance to university? Can anybody suggest a reliable car rental company as we might travel down to Florida. Does anybody know if Malaysian driving license valid to rent and drive in US? What to do in Athens or surrounding town (besides TA's things to do list)?

Thanks, any inputs are most welcome.

Usually stay out on Hwy 316 for lodging so cannot tell you about downtown except for the one time we stayed at the Holiday Inn which was fine.

A day trip down to historic Madison would be nice- just a couple of hours away with old historic homes, antique shops and nice restaurants on the town square.

If you are there on the weekend of Sept. 29- it is a home UGA football game. The town will be packed with traffic.

In Downtown Athens, EVERYTHING is easily within walking distance of UGA. It's a walking town, for sure. And taxis are cheap if you don't want to walk, plus there is a very reliable bus service. I'd stay at the Holiday Inn, Residence Inn or Hotel Indigo, personally. Check out the Classic Center Hotel on UGA campus too. Incidentally, if you're on campus, you don't need any sort of ID to jump on a UGA bus to take you anywhere on campus.

For rental car companies, Hertz or Enterprise would be my vote.

Couldn't tell you about the drivers license requirements in Georgia. Check with AAA on their website.

Things to do in Athens: Definitely go to the football game on Saturday. You can buy tickets from "scalpers". I recommend going to the Sanford Drive bridge area and just walk around with your arm up above your head and your fingers indicating the number of tickets you want to buy. Someone will stop you. Look for tickets in the 100-level for lower section seating.

Downtown Athens is a cute, typical American college town with some fun shops, unique restaurants and a bar on every other corner. Nightlife is fun. Young, but fun.

Take a campus tour. You'll learn a good bit about the history of the school along the way. The Georgia Museum of Art is a nice distraction. Check out the events scheduled at the Classic Center and The Georgia Theater. There might be a good concert in town. You can play golf on UGA's course. Go to the State Botanical Gardens.

There is decent outlet shopping about 30 minutes away in Commerce.

Plan on making at least one trip into Atlanta for the day to go to World of Coke (tourist trap, but one of those obligatory must-sees), Atlanta History Museum, High Museum of Art or the Aquarium.
