Lago de Izabal on the Rio Dulce to Livingston?

Years ago we took the classic boat ride from Livingston up the Rio Dulce to the Lake. Now we are planning a trip coming from Guatemala City, and reaching the Lake first, and overnighting.

Question is, is it possible to take a boat in reverse, from the Lake into Rio Dulce to Livingston? We are looking for some reliable guidance (contacts, times, cost). Much thanks, Charles Simmons

At the town of Fronteras, it is the town commonly referred to as Rio Dulce, you will find the dock where the public launches depart from. They seem to leave once they have been filled, there is also a bit of variety in the boats as some have larger engines and go faster, some go direct, and some do the sight seeing tour where they head up to the fort and then make little stops along the way.

In Rio Dulce, stop by the Sun Dog Cafe, it is next to Rio Bravo for fantastic coffee and excellent food. They are also a terrific source for getting unbiased information on the area. Saskia is one of the proprieters, she is originally from Alaska.
