Hotel Door Locks and Leaving Luggage in Hotels

I've heard that some hotels do not have door locks on private rooms. We are staying at nicer hotels ($150 +/night USD) for most of our stay, but in Panajachel we could only find a lower-end hotel.

What do you do with your luggage during the day? Obviously I'll be taking everything valuable with me, but I'd hate to have any problems at all.

Also, our hotel is providing a shuttle from Panajachel to the Chichi market and onward to Antigua. While we stop at the Chichi market what are we to do with our luggage? Carting it around would draw unwanted attention.

Is it suggested to bring a backpack in which EVERYTHING (clothes, toiletries, etc) can fit and be kept on me?

1. Re: Hotel Door Locks and Leaving Luggage in Hotels

The only hotel I've ever heard of in Guatemala not having locks on guest room doors is one in Chichi.

I've never "lost" anything that I left in my room.

In Chichi, your driver should be staying with the van, so your stuff should be secure.
