I'm heading to Guatemala on the 20th of Feb for 10 days. My niece lives in Xela so we'll see Antigua, Lake Atitlan on the way there. I will also have a day or two to see the museums in GCity. Here is my question for those who know the country and who love to see ruins - should I make the trip to Copan and back then head west? It seems to be either a three or four hour drive so could be 8 hr rt before we even start west. I have been to Tikal and I know Copan is not as majestic but is older and very important. Also, I feel like getting to El Mirador on this trip would be just too complicated with what is going on up there (even though we are all road warriors). But - there are a lot of ruins in Guatemala. Do I need Copan? Are there cool ruins to see within a few hours of Xela?
The amount of time we have is just on the edge. Three more days and we would definitely be going to Copan. I don't have a real grasp of how good the roads are and what the terrain is really like. We will be driving btw. thanks for any of your ideas! - Moira
