“ Where is the best snorkeling in CR? ”

for Arenal Volcano National Park, La Fortuna de San Carlos

Hi, guys! Where is the best snorkeling that you've done in CR? We did it in MA, but it was kind of a bust due to all the sediment in the water, and we loved Tortuguero, but of course you can't get in the water there. What area would you recommend? Is there any place where we can snorkel right off the beach and see colorful fish? I know CR isn't really known for great snorkeling, but there must be some out there. I know you guys will know! Thanks for any guidance you can give me.

i think it depends on the time of year you're going. we went to puerto viejo area in sept/oct and there was amazing snorkeling right off the beach. in that area cahuita and punta uva are really nice. then we went to nicoya penninsula in feb/mar after reading that there was great snorkeling near cabuya island and playa las manchas. perhaps it was the time of year, but the visibility wasn't good at all and the water was a bit rough. hope that helps :)

Cahuita and Isla Tortuga are great for snorkeling!

Cano Island is an absolute tropical paradise when the conditions are right. January - April are the best months to go. Loads of reef fish. You should see dolphins and have a good shot at seeing sea turtles and whales. Humpbacks migrate here from both the northern and southern hemispheres. A lot of white tipped sharks if you choose to dive.

Regarding the sharks, are they only in the deeper areas where you dive?

The white tipped sharks generally hang around the ocean floor and are considered harmless.
