Tikal vs. Caracol (or should we try to do both?

We'll be in Cayo 4 full days (arriving Sunday afternoon, leaving early Friday morning) One day we definitely want to do ATM cave. We're trying to decide between Caracol and Tikal---or should we try to go to both. If both, any recommendations for our 4th day?

This is how I would do it.....

Day 1 - Visit Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave.

Day 2 - Visit Caracol, Rio Frio Cave, etc.. Stay in Cayo.

Day 3 - Visit Tikal for sunset tour. Stay the night in the Tikal National Park.

Say 4 - Sunrise tour of Tikal. Return to Cayo.

Sounds like that would be a great 4 days. Our good friend has done sunrise sunset at Tikal and she highly recommends it.

If you love ruins, then that's a good way to do it. Or you could do the day trip to Tikal, and that would allow a local day in Cayo, maybe see the market, Iguana Hatchery, and Cahal Pech or Xuanantunich.

Side note in regards to the Sunrise tour of Tikal. After 10 years of talking to 1000's of people that have done it, I finally met someone that actually saw the sun. You won't see the sun rise, but everyone says that doesn't matter.

Merry Christmas!

We just did 5 nights / 4 days and really, either spending 2 days in Tikal as suggested by some or doing the alternative of one day Tikal and one day local (Cachal Pech, market, Xuanantunich etc) it's not to really matter. And like you are thinking, the other two days are WELL spent at ATM and Caracol - neither to be missed.

Note that ATM must be with a guide and Caracol should be with a guide and includes a point beyond which should be done with once a day military escorted convoy (both in and out). Cahal Pech and Xuanantich are both do-able solo.

We used Cayo Adeventure Tours and (Michael Simmons) and highly recommended.

Philip, please review CAT if you can. They don't have many reviews, so even though they are all perfect, they need more. tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g291971-d1…

Glad you made the most of your stay!
