Okay, I have been researching places enough! It's time to decide. At first I thought I'd go with Mopan River Resort---it sounds great and super easy, but after adding it all up, I started to consider renting a car. The car rental is almost the same as our resort transport would be. It will also help keep our activity cost down since we can go to the activities or tour operators ourselves instead having the resort arrange. A car will also gives us flexibility on our arrival to see some sites (we arrive in the morning) without wasting time waiting for pickup. We are only staying 3 or 4 nights in Cayo, and then the remainder of our 7 nights will be in Ambergris Caye. (Can't decide which area to short--my husband is a diver).
I've looked at the above lodges. Any thoughts or preferences? I am realizing that the real expense of the accomodations is not the room rate, but the addition of tours, meals, transport, and time. And, although I like rustic for some occasions, this trip I would rather have something pleasing to the eye and comfortable.
