Mayan Ruins

Can we get to Mayan Ruins easily from San Pedro or is it better to go from Belize City. Also how do we get there ie. boat? rental car ?

Many impressive Mayan sites on the mainland. Closest to San Pedro would be Altun Ha by boat; shortest trip would be Lamanai by air. Other sites scattered around the country from north to south; most interesting (hate to use that word when referring to temples) in western Belize

You can also get to Xunantunich, which is one of the larger sites, by air and it's a lovey trip. There are excursions offered to these sites available from most tour companies and resorts in San Pedro.

Thank you! We are wondering if we should stay one night in Belize city, rent a vehicle and drive to one of the bigger sites. We've been told there's not much other reason to stay in Belize City but if it's a better way to see ruins we would do that. Anyone done this?

We had a great trip from San Pedro to Tikal and Xunantunich Mayan sites, with overnighting in San Ignacio. By air to Belize City, by van from BC to Guatemala border, across the border to Tikal, then back to San Ignacio, overnighted, then in the morning, Xunantunich, and on the way back, did some ziplining. Then, from Belize City by air back to San Pedro. It was a wonderful two days and the Mayan sites were both magnificent, one of my favorite experiences in Belize. Seems like a lot but really we did not feel rushed at all, and saw a lot of Belize.

If you are going to stay on the mainland, you are far better staying in Cayo, which is beautiful and closer to the larger sites. Hiring a car for just a one day trip may not turn out as fun as you might think. I'd definitely recommend going with a guide or tour. You'll be able to relax, have a great time and learn so much about Belize and the ruins you decide to visit.

I wouldn't stay in Belize City. You can always stay at the Belize Zoo's Tropical Education Center, or Cayo, although I'm biased for Cayo, haha.
