Resort in Belize for family with older teenagers/young adult

We have never been to Belize but are thinking of travelling there next spring break with our two sons, 20 and 18. Any suggestions on resorts that would address the needs of parents (beach, pool, snorkeling, etc) and teenaged boys (surf, sun, activities and other families with kids the same age)?

Most resorts in Belize are small, less than 50 rooms. No way of knowing if there will be others there with similar aged kids.

Essentially no surfing in Belize, although I've read there is a bit offered through Slickwater Adventures, not sure where though, but, it will be an isolated area.

I'd look on Ambergris Caye, probably closer to town, rather than the more remote northern resorts. If there aren't other tourists to hang with, there will be lots of locals around, easy to get in on beach volley ball and the like.

On the north side of town, look at the Phoenix. South of town, Xanadu, Caribbean Villas, Banyan Bay.

Further south, Athens Gate, Pelican Reef.

There are others as well. Look at the reviews on here and see what appeals.

Many families will be traveling the same time as you are and your kids will have an opportuity to meet others to hang with, either where you stay, on trips you do, or milling about town. If you have an interest in seeing Mayan sites, exploring caves, river and horse trips, jungle and waterfalls, you might want to consider splitting your trip between the beach and mainland or choose a beach destination with easy access to mainland. Slick Rock on Long Caye on Glovers offers something similiar to surfing, but Belize is not a surf destination. For that you would look at CA countries on the Pacific.

Some of the larger hotels & resorts may be good with kids your ages - like Grand Caribe on N Ambergris Caye, or Robert's Grove in Placencia. I would second Katie's advice to split it up and do part inland and part on the beach. You get a much fuller experience of the country and there are lots of great adventures to do inland (Maya ruins, rappelling, hiking, mtn biking, zip line, canoeing or tubing through caves, etc.) Take a look at Caves Branch Adventure Lodge for your inland time. Awesome place with tons to do.

Since your sons aren't kids, I'd get them researching to so they "buy in" to whatever your family decides. Like everyone says, splitting the time between the Cayo and a Caye makes for a nicely balanced visit. It is a real treat of a place to visit!
