Another Hot Springs Question

Since my Dh and I will be riding our bikes into Avila from SLO, a hot tub might feel nice. Does anyone know how long the road is to get there? Is it steep? We do hill climbing, but I don't feel like tackling a 10% grade for very long.

Thanks

Danielle

1. Re: Another Hot Springs Question

There is a good incline just before riding into town, but it shouldn't prove too difficult if you're used to hill climbing.

Sycamore Mineral Springs (where the hot tubs are) is actually located on Avila Beach Drive between the 101 freeway and the town of Avila, NOT in Avila itself. It's a short ride past San Luis Bay Drive heading away from the town of Avila.

The distance between the freeway and the town of Avila is approx. 2 miles.

You can access the Bob Jones Bike Trail off Ontario Road to avoid some auto traffic, if you like. This is a pretty trail through Sycamore trees and along San Luis Creek.

Call in advance to book your hot tub, Sycamore Springs is a great place, they also have a good restaurant, the Gardesn of Avila if you want dinner after or before your soak. Have fun! :)

3. Re: Another Hot Springs Question

We were thinking about having dinner at the springs, but it loks like a pretty fancy restaurant. I am not sure what clothes we can pack on our bikes, we might just stay in our bike clothes, do the hot tub thing and then ride back to SLO. Still trying to figure things out. We also want to ride out to a winery or two if it is not too hot as we will be heading out in the morning and coming back in the afternoon.

The Gardens of Avila Restaurant is a dress up kind of place, as you suspect. There are many great restaurants in SLO you can enjoy after your ride and a clean-up. Novo, Buona Tavola, Fandango Bistro, The Madonna Inn Gold Rush Steakhouse, Thai Palace are just a few.

There are some nice wineries you can bike to out in Edna Valley south of SLO. Tolosa, Edna Valley & Baileyana are good choices and would allow you to make a circle back to SLO. Start with Tolosa off Hwy 227 (Broad St.), then Edna Valley Winery on Biddle Ranch Road, ending with Baileyana on Orcutt Road. You'll find Baileyana especially bike friendly. Great grass area with tables and pleasant vineyard views.
