West Virginia family reunion- summer 2014

We are planning a family reunion for summer 2014 and need help determining an area of the state to focus our search. There will be 13 of us, ranging in age from 6 to 70. Can anyone suggest locations/cities for us to research? Ideally we would like an area that has a lot of things to do, including leisure activities like swimming, hiking, fishing, train ride, as well as white water rafting and zip lining for the bigger kids and adults. Our budget for lodging is about $3500 and we are hoping to find a house to rent for a week. I've started researching Fayetteville but many of the houses we like are already booked, and wasn't sure what other areas might be suitable for us. Thanks in advance for your help.

I think the best family whitewater is in the Fayetteville area. It is hard to find all of those things in one spot. If houses are booked, you might check the surrounding area....Beckley is larger, Summersville, Hico. We like the Canaan Valley/ Davis area. The hiking is good, there are lots of kid activities at Canaan Valley State park, Black Water Falls is near & Davis has some interesting little shops & restaurants. I think the closest train ride is in Elkins, and that is a dinner train. When we stayed in Canaan we drove to Cass, about 1:45 away. It was a long day but we enjoyed it. The fall colors were wonderful...but not sure about how pretty it would be in the summer. There should be lots of housing at Canaan or Timberline as they are ski resort areas. We didn't do zip lining, but I am sure it is available, but I am not sure about the whitewater. By the way, our family that stayed at Canaan was from Cleveland area too....Cleveland, North Ridgeville, La Grange..........

You may want to look at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling: http://www.oglebay-resort.com/

It is close to upstate Ohio and is a beautiful resort with much to do: 4 golf courses, a zoo, good dining, a lodge, cabins, indoor and outdoor pools, mini golf, horseback riding, etc.

Also, you are close to the city of Wheeling with the dining and entertainment they have to offer (including the Wheeling Downs Casino for the over-21 group).
