Northern W. Virginia Getaway, winery?

Hi! My husband & I are looking to plan a weekend getaway to northern W. Va. He'd like to incorporate visiting a winery, if possible, or even staying a winery if they offer it. Does anyone have any advice on towns we should look into or resorts?

I think that would be determined by what area you would refer to as “Northern West Virginia.”

I live in Morgantown, and we are about 80 miles south of Pittsburgh on Interstate 79. There are three good wineries in our area.

Forks of Cheat in Morgantown: http://www.wvwines.com/

Christian Klay (across the border in Pennsylvania): http://www.cwklaywinery.com/

Heston Farms in Fairmont: http://hestonfarm.com/

Heston Farms has a summer concert series, and open-mic nights year round. Their food comes highly recommended.

Resorts would include:

Lakeview Resort: http://www.lakeviewresort.com/

Waterfront Place: http://www.waterfrontplacehotel.com/

Stonewall Resort: http://www.stonewallresort.com/

Stonewall is 50 miles south of Morgantown, and Lambert’s Vintage Wine would be a closer winery: http://www.lambertsvintagewine.com/

When I think of “Northern West Virginia,” I think of the Panhandle and Wheeling. If that is your destination, then the two resorts I would recommend would be Oglebay in Wheeling or Mountaineer Casino in Chester: http://www.oglebay-resort.com/

You would have to search the Pittsburgh area for Vineyards, as I don’t know of any in Wheeling.

Another area to look into would be Deep Creek Lake/ Oakland, Maryland. It is about 45 minutes away from Morgantown. Beautiful area year round (a ski resort in the Winter/ boating lake in the summer). WISP Resort is really nice, and there is so much to do in that area: http://www.wispresort.com/

There is also a Winery: http://www.deepcreekcellars.com/

If you are really interested in Wineries, I would consider a trip down Interstate 81 in Virginia to Interstate 64 East to Charlottesville. There are probably 30 vineyards in that area, and probably another 30 you would pass along the way.

Good luck, and if you have any specific questions, I’ll do my best to help.
