Help: Route from Lexington VA to Moundsville to Weston, WV

Can you suggest a driving route from Lexington, VA to Moundsville, WV (and then the next day) to Weston, WV?

Here is what I am thinking:

Lexington, VA to Moundsville, VA:

I-81 to I-64W

Then, I-64 to 77 N

Then, 77 to WV2

After Moundsville, VA, I was thinking of staying at the Wheeling Island Casino. (Bad idea?) Then, taking this route the next day:

Wheeling WV to Weston, WV

I-70E to 79South

Would this be a nice route? I am not used to mountain roads, so I would like a "safe" route.

P.S. Is it worth stopping by the Mystery Hole on the way back from Weston, WV to Lexington, VA?

You're route to Moundsville, WV sounds good... I think you'll have 2 tolls on I-77 between Beckley and Charleston. The interstate drive is easy unless you get stuck in construction or an accident occurs and backs up traffic... The drive along the Ohio River has some beautiful sites on both sides. (I've driven both WV SR-2 or OH SR-7.)

I haven't been to the casino's so don't have a personal preference... here is the TA info: tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g59642-d622375-…

The route from Wheeling to Weston is also a good route. There is a pinch point at the I-70 / I-79 interchange - just be aware, if traffic is heavy, it will be a crawl at that intersection. US-250 to I-79 could be a second option if you don't want to drive interstates two days in a row...

Have a great trip!

The route you chose from Lexington to Moundsville is definitely the easiest. Once you get off of Interstate 64, the roads smooth out and by the time you get on WV 2 from Parkersburg to Wheeling, you'll think you are in a different state because the road is beside the Ohio River and is flat.

I've been to the Wheeling Island Casino many times, and have really enjoyed it. The casino is nice and very festive. However, I have never stayed in the hotel. Wheeling is known for their Italian food, so you may want to explore a few restaurants there (Bella Via, Undo's, Figaretti's).

Downtown Wheeling is small, and just across the river from the Casino. There is a historic old hotel downtown that you may want to look into: http://www.mclurehotelwheeling.com/

Your route back to Weston is definitely the easiest, being all interstate driving. I'll assume that your tour to Moundsville and Weston are to visit the old Prison and the old Asylum. Sounds like a paranormal exploration! If so, have fun. Both are very interesting and worth the money for the tours.

As for the Mystery Hole, it is about as tacky as you can get. I love it! But, it is definitely not a "must see." And the road to get there (route 60) is very scenic, but VERY twisty. If you aren't used to mountain roads, it would be an adventure for you! If you decide to go to the Mystery Hole, then be sure to stop at Hawks Nest State Park for the incredible view.

Have a great trip. Please feel free to toss out any questions you may have.

There is only one change I would make. Since you are going to the casinos, I would cross the river at St. Marys off of West Virginia route 2. When you cross the bridge, you will be on Ohio route 7. At the stop sign, turn LEFT. That takes you right up the river on the Ohio side.

That will bring you up the side of the river that the casino is actually on. And second. Route 7 in Ohio is a MUCH better road than route 2 in West Virginia. I have traveled both many times.

Route 2 is just not a great road when you get past St. Marys.

And when you get to Wheeling, as I said, you are on the right side of the river for the casinos. You don't have to get on I 70 to cross over to the casinos.

Well, you don't really have to get on the interstate, but unless you have been there before, that is the best way without getting lost crossing over from downtown Wheeling to the casinos.
