lodging suggestions coming by train

This probably has been asked and answered...forty yr. old couple flying in to BWI on May 11th and taking the train to D.C. Would like to stay in an area for touring (under $200.) for 2 days, and then we are training back to BWI on the evening of May 13th, staying at the Embassy more than likely as it is in the airport, so we can fly out the next morning. First visit.

If we stay around the train station, we would be able to leave our bag while we tour for the day before leaving that evening. If we are out of the area, we would need to metro in to tour, metro back to get bags, then get to the train station.

Does this make sense?

It kind of matters how much money you intend to spend. There are a number of hotels just west and southwest of Union Station. Their only convenience for you is that when you pick up your luggage at the end of the day, you can walk to Union Station.

The Capitol is directly south of Union Station, so there aren't any hotels straight south. If you stay at one of those you can walk or take the train to the Smithsonian, and take the train easily to whatever stations are closest to everything else you want to see.

Frankly, I'd just hop the Metro at Union Station (it's inside the station) and ride a few stops west on the Red Line. There's a number of places to near Gallery Place and Metro Center which are the first two stops you'll come to including a Marriott directly above Metro Center.

These are near many of the major sites or a quick one stop ride away if you really don't want to walk and most every hotel will let you leave your bags with the concierge for the day (either prior to checkin or at the end of your stay after checkout). Some may charge a small fee or expect a tip.

Once you're done, you can simply pick up your bags and ride back to Union Station with easy access to the trains.
