transportation from Reston, Va to downtown DC

On this weekend, we are driving to DC and planning to rent a hotel somewhere in Dulles airport area, how can we go to downtown DC without driving our car? Can we drive & park our car in one of the closest metro station? Is it safe to park the car over there? How much is the parking in the station? how long will be the metro ride to DC area if park our car in one of the station in the orange or red line?

Please advice.

Is there a particular reason you're choosing Reston? That is not a really convenient place to stay for DC tourists--not great public transit out there. You might be better off staying somewhere north of the city (assuming you're coming from NY), like Bethesda, and then Metroing in. The Hilton Garden Inn in Bethesda has recent been mentioned on this forum as a convenient and affordable spot.

If you're committed to staying in Reston and here only on the weekend, my advice would be just to drive straight into the city and park at Union Station or another pay lot. The traffic into the city shouldn't be too bad so long as you avoid driving around the Tidal Basin.

You can drive all the way and park somewhere downtown in a commercial garage or lot, like at Union Station. You could drive to one of the Metro lots on the Orange or Red Lines, with Orange being the easiest coming from Reston. On weekends Metro lots are free. And it depends on which one you choose as to how long the trip will be. The Metro site can answer all your questions about that. http://www.wmata.com/

If you are staying in Reston Town Center, you can easily catch a bus from there to the West Falls Church Metro station. If you are not in the Town Center area, you can park your car at the Monroe Park and Ride in Herndon. This P&R is very close to Reston---in fact, it's right by the Reston/Herndon Border off Sunrise Valley Drive. It is free to park there and you can catch a bus from there to the West Falls Church Metro station. Also, depending on which hotel you are staying in, they may offer a free local shuttle for their guests. If so, you can ask to be taken to the P&R.

Or, if you prefer, you can drive to the Vienna Metro station. Parking is free on weekends at Metro stations. That's what we do when we go into DC. It's far less of a hassle than driving into the city!

the hotels at the Dulles airport area are more affordable.....that is the reason we want to stay there.

How much will it cost to park at Union station or other parking lots?

For Union Station:

For other garages, rates will vary. On the weekdays, I would expect to pay $12-$20 for the day, depending on the specific location.

For weekend only, the Ronald Reagan Building offers a good rate of $10 for the day. It is near 14th Street & Penn Ave. It is a federal building, so sometimes they may check your vehicle before allowing you to enter for security reasons.

It has a food court, as a side benefit.

Are hotels all the way out near Dulles Airport really cheap enough to make up for the time you will spend getting to and from DC? You are talking about the better part of an hour each way.
