Best location to stay in Seattle with family

We are looking to spend 3 nights in Seattle in May 2015 with our 2 children and would like to know which parts of Seattle would be best to stay. We will have a car so can get around with thoughts of visiting the Boeing factory, hop on hop off tour around Seattle and day trip to Roslyn WA. We would also like any feedback on great hotels. Also happy to hear about areas on the outskirts of the city.

In Seattle you dont need a car. If you plan on exploring other areas then look outside the downtown area for cheaper rates (airport area, suburbs)

FYI--Boeing factory and Boeing Museum are two different things.

What do you want to see?

Thank you for your post. We were looking to go to the Boeing factory as I heard they ran tours of the site. We were also thinking of Bellevue area for accommodation although not sure if this area is ok? We are happy to not be located in the centre of the city.

If you're going to Roslyn and Boeing, being outside of the city will be fine. On the way to Roslyn you should stop for a walk at the Hyak tunnel on the John Wayne Trail. The kids will love it -- bring flashlights!! (torches) You should go to the Future of Flight museum, too.

Actually, you should work on getting a few more days!

With the kids' ages, and fine for adults as well, there are many things to do in Seattle that would best a day trip to Roslyn, for which you might have reasons unknown to us.

For example:

Ballard/Chittenden Locks www.myballard.com/ballard-locks-seattle/

Pike Place Market www.pikeplacemarket.org/frameset.asp…

Ferry Ride to/from Bainbridge Island (short and scenic, then walk the little town of BI)

Museum of Flight A world class museum, for all ages. http://www.museumofflight.org/

Seattle Center (site of the 1962 World's Fair) and Space Needle

I'd stay downtown. It is much more convenient than elsewhere for many of the sights.

If price is the issue, let us know or select "Hotels" at top of page and filter for your price needs.

From the airport to downtown, take public transportation or cab (see article, Top Questions, on the right). If you stay downtown, rent a car there, much cheaper than at the airport, until needed for more distant sights.

In May (I hope you have sun), Snoqualmie Falls will be in full flow. You'd need to drive there.

Snoqualmie Train Museum and Rides (Seen on the way to or from Snoqualmie Falls.) http://www.trainmuseum.org/

Snoqualmie Falls East of Seattle less than one hour. Bring a jacket, it can be misty and cool. http://www.snoqualmiefalls.com/

Archie McPhee Store For the fun of it… http://www.mcphee.com/shop/ Kids will love it.

Is this the Boeing venture you are considering? Given the kids' ages, either this or the Museum of Flight might be fine, but most folks I know favor the latter.

I, too would recommend staying downtown, however, with your suggested interests, your schedule, and that you will be renting a car, Bellevue is fine. From your posts, I would allocate as follows: Seattle (1 day); Boeing Tour (1/2 day) with destinations north + add perhaps Mukilteo lighthouse + ferry landing; Rosyln and destinations east with Snoqualmie Pass, Snoqualmie Falls.

In Bellevue, the Marriott Residence Inn is right off the freeway (I-405), and offers suite-style rooms, breakfast included, and an indoor pool. It's a good option for families. Because of it's location though, be aware that you will have to drive everywhere - even to restaurants in Bellevue. There are other affordable hotel options in Bellevue within walking distance of restaurants, etc, including Courtyard by Marriott, Silver Cloud. More expensive hotels will be the Westin + Hyatt. And, opening in Downtown Bellevue in November 2014, will be a new full-service Marriott.

How old are the kids? Note there are restrictions on kids going on the tour - minimum height. http://www.futureofflight.org

Have a look at the Silver Cloud Hotel on Lake Union - http://www.silvercloud.com/seattlelakeunion/ Free parking, local shuttle, walk to the Lake Union streetcar (a block or so, level) for access to downtown, Pike market etc. It's also fairly convenient to the on/off ramps for I-5 for excursions north or east.
