Help Required with Block Island and Newport

My wife and I are planning to visit Rhode Island and Block Island in mid September. I need help with planning the trip.

The following is our itinerary. We are both vegetarians (eggs, dairy are OK). Will this be a problem? Any recos for restaurants etc would be great.

We'll be driving from Boston to Newport, arriving in the evening and staying overnight. Any recommendations for hotels?

Starting the next morning:

DAY 1: Newport Mansions

Any particular mansions we must visit? How much time do we need for this?

We plan to leave in the evening for Port Judith, and take the fast ferry to Block Island.

Where should we park at Port Judith? How much will it cost? Is it safe?

DAY 2: Block Island.

Please recommend some easy/moderate trails besides the beach.

Where should we stay? We are not keen on being close to the action/partying. Restaurants?

DAY 3: Back to Port Judith, drive to Boston

Is it necessary to make reservations in advance for the fast ferry or can we buy tickets on the spot?

milemarker is the newport expert, so i'm sure he can give you dining options around newport.

i've taken my kids to all of the mansions and my favorites were rosecliff and the breakers. you should do the cliff walk while you're there as that is a great way to see the mansions and the surrounding scenary.

when you drive into point judith, there will be many places that advertise directly on the road for parking, so where ever you park, you'll only be minutes from the dock. if you get there before 7:30am, the parking is free, othwerwise, it's generally $10.00 and its perectly safe. point judith where you'll be is very, very small, so don't expect a huge waterfront, because it's not.

the last boat leaves at 6:45pm, so plan accordingly.

for BI hiking, the bluffs are great. this link gives most of the trails:

i'm a vegetarian and my favorite place is in narragansett (about 10 minutes from point judith) and its called crazy burger. www.crazyburger.com if you can do that for dinner/late lunch, try it.

have fun!

gbtour: Thank you very much for the information!

How much time should we plan to spend in Newport?

Should we buy ferry tickets in advance, or can we buy them just before the ferry leaves?

Make a reservation for the ferry just to be safe. You'd hate to get there and have it sold out.

For Newport, if you tour 2-3 mansions and have lunch/late lunch, plan on 4-6 hours.

For mansions, the Breakers is the biggest and most well known. I like the fact that they went to the audio tour (as opposed to the guided tours) I think this allows the visitor to do the tour at their own pace. Marble House and the Elms already had the self guided audio tours. I would say that you could do those 3 in an afternoon without too much trouble.

As far as vegeterian dining, most places have options that you will be able to find something. There is not really a Vegeterian or Vegan specific restaurant that I can think of.

Check out www.gonewport.com for some listings and links to menues, as well as all sorts of lodging options.

Some favorite waterfront spots:

The Mooring, 22 Bowens, Clarke Cooke House, @theDeck, Asterisks.

Casual fare:

Red Parrot, The Brick Alley, Buskers

Funky/Eclectic:

Salvation Cafe

Italian:

Mama Luisa's, Sardella's, Puerini's

For views and a drink:

Inn at Castle Hill
