Motorbike trip in April/May 2013

We will be heading up through Oregon in late April-early May. As we are on a motorbike (2-up) we want to avoid ice/snow, which means we may have to miss out some stunning locations but where would you recommend we visit? Should we stick to the 101 or go inland? We will be leaving LA in late April and hope to be in Vancouver by End May.

All advice welcome!

Thanks,

Carole

Hwy 101 most likely will not have snow or ice - but it has snowed here in April before!

It will however, have rain. Maybe a lot, maybe not too much. Some probably every day or most days. Great scenery all along the coast though.

Carole,

I think we all understood.

I see you are new to TA. Welcome.

You may be ok inland, the coast gets more snow than we do here in Troutdale. Our weather is so change-able that I would keep my schedule open and go where you can at a change in weather.

What are your interests, budget and lodging budget?

We have a very open view and always go with the flow, depending on weather and mood on the day. We love to see new places, especially if picturesque. Photography features high, as does good food and live music. With regards accommodation we need good Internet connections and we try to keep each night below 100 dollars; ideally 60-80. This will be our 3rd time in the USA, so are now quite used to things there.

Hmmm. 60 to 80, huh? You might look into McMenamins, as they have hostel rooms. Edgefield here in Troutdale is the Multnomah County Poor Farm and has quite a history. It's a kick to go to.

The McMenamin Brothers buy up historic buildings and turn them into unique destination hotels. They keep to the history of the building and add great to it.

Just about all towns along the Oregon coast have smaller, older mom-and-pop motels that will easily be within your budget. These are not fancy and most won't have ocean views, but here is an example of one in Yachats that does:

Come inland, no questions asked. The beach is pretty much the same wherever you drive. My suggested route is come up until you hit 101 and come up the coastal range until you reach Lincoln city; from there move inward onto highway 22 and take that into the inland. You'll pass a casino which is nice, a little town called Dallas Oregon that has thee best pizza place I have ever had (I've been to New York, Chicago and Boston. I love Ugo's Pizza more than them.) This Trip will drop you into the State Capital of Salem and the capital building is very beautiful and downtown Salem is neat. Follow 22 east and head out that way. Beautiful scenery, a bunch of little tucked away towns and Silver Falls (if you're a hiker or even just someone who likes nature) is just breathtaking.

Those are just a few things you can do, I hope that helps.
