October Road Trip- Need some advice

Driving from Atlanta to New Orleans with my wife (both 30). Here is our itinerary:

day 1 (will leave ATL in the afternoon)- drive to Mobile Area

Day 2 spend day driving slowly to New Orleans through Ocean Springs/Biloxi/Gulfport etc. Stay just outside New Orleans

Day 3-5- New Orleans

Day 6- Drive to Natchez (Stay over in Natchez or drive to Vicksburg)

Day 7- Vicksburg (night drive approx half way back to ATL 2/3 hrs)

Day 8- Drive back to ATL for flight home.

the 1st part of the itinerary seems to work well. I am a little concerned about Natchez/Vicksburg. It adds an additional 4 hrs and makes the plan feel very tight and we will be hoping in/out of the car too much.

I haven't been able to come up with a better alternative other than spend more time in New Orleans or Atlanta.

Any ideas?

You could probably squeeze in the Natchez/Vicksburg visit, but personally I like to take more time to enjoy these areas, completely different from ATL or NO. I would spend the extra time in Atlanta where there's lots to see and do. Come back to Natchez/Vicksburg when you're not rushed.

I think that is the right thing to do. Would prefer not to feel rushed and do not think that is possible with Natchez in the plan.

Here is a revised itinerary. seems to give flexibility on where we spend the days in between ATL and New Orleans and not be so rushed.

Day 1: ATL.

Day 2: Leave ATL and drive through Birmingham and stay somewhere like Hattiesburg. Is there someone else you recommend staying 1-2 hrs outside of New Orleans along this route?

Day 3-5: New Orleans

Day 6: maybe spend night in somewhere like Gulfport? flexibility to spend more time in NO or wherever we are going to spend night.

Day 7: drive slowly along gulf coast and spend night somewhere like Montgomery.

Day 8: drive back to ATL.

Gulfport / Montgomery were chosen for location along the route. Definitely open to other places to spend the night if you have suggestions.

Hattiesburg will be ok for an overnight stop. I'm personally not a fan of Gulfport or Montgomery (no offense to anyone). Why not leave day 6 flexible so if you're having a great time in NO, you can stay another day? If you've had enough, you can hit the road. There are casinos in Biloxi if you like that kind of atmosphere. Why not head over to Gulf Shores, AL for day 6,7, or both? It's maybe 3.5 hours from New Orleans, beach town with decent hotels & restaurants. You can still take route 90 along the coast in Mississippi to where the route intersects with I-10 east, then take highway 59 south to Gulf Shores. Gulf Shores is about 6 hours from Atlanta. Day 8, head back north on 59 all the way to I-65 (above Mobile) then on through Montgomery to Atlanta.

Thanks for advice. We decided to Stay in Hattiesburg for the overnight stop and Biloxi for the night after New Orleans. Seems to give us the most flexibility and work with our itinerary.
