My boyfriend and I are from London and are planning an American adventure this April for his 30th birthday. We fly in to Washington and hope to make our way via the Appalachians, to nashville, memphis and down to New Orleans in time for the jazz festival.
Our original plan was to drive the whole way but car hire is turning out to be extremely expensive and we only have two weeks for the whole thing.
Does anyone have any advice on good (low budget) ways to travel between these places? We are open to experiencing any and all. We have heard of the Greyhound and Amtrak etc but are not sure about whether they cover our route or the pro's and cons. Any advice would be really really welcome!
Also any thoughts about low-medium budget accommodation along the way would be great too! A travel agent yesterday told us we need to budget around $150 per night but that seems a little crazy! Was he right or are there some hidden gems somewhere?
Thank you in advance for any help or information!!!
