Blues road trip

We are planning a 3 week road trip Sept. 30 to Oct. 21....starting and returning to NY with stops in MD, WV, KY, GA, VA on the way to and from Tennessee and Mississippi where we hope to meander along the river, hear some blues, follow the Blues Trail, etc. We have previously been to New Orleans and Cajun country, Smoky Mt. Natl Park and Knoxville so those will not be part of this trip.

From Nashville to Memphis to Jackson to Natchez.......where should we plan to spend time and how many days, what routes do you recommend to drive, which places should we plan to catch music, get the flavor, which special motels, hotels, resorts, restaurants, sights should we visit?

Also, do we need reservations in advance that time of year or can we wing it reserving as we go along a day or two in advance via internet and cell phone?

Drive S from Memphis to Clarksdale about an hour away and spend a night in Clarksdale, MS home of the blues. Spend the night in an authentic plantation shack at Shack Up Inn. Visit Morgan Freeman's Ground Zero Blues Club, the Blues Museum, Hick's BBQ and Tamales and Ranchero for steaks and seafood. Head S to Greenwood, MS and spend the night at the 4 * Alluvian Hotel owned by Viking Range. Have dinner at Giardinia's or Lusco's. Head S to Vicksburg, MS and visit the National Military Park. Visit the Antebellum homes. Dine at Rusty's on the Riverfront for steaks and seafood or Walnut Hills for good country food. Drive S to historic Natchez, MS and visit the antebellum homes. Stay at Monmouth Plantation.

Head back N on # 61 and stop at Doe's Eat Place in Greenville, MS for great steaks and seafood. Head N to Oxford, MS home of University of Mississippi. Visit the Square and have lunch at City Grocery. Be sure to visit the Ole Miss campus and William Faulkner's home. Head back N to home.
