Places to stay with a difference

My family and I are travelling from England to new England for our summer vacation. We have to be in Boston on 17th August to pick up our eldest daughter from the airport and are renting a house on Cape Cod from Friday 23rd August. In between we want to hire a car and travel around a little to get a flavour of the area. We have three girls of 9, 11 and 17 and are not so much looking for tourist attractions as places to absorb the atmosphere. We would also like to stay in places a little different to hotels and would consider a farm stay, yurts, log cabins etc (although we would have to stay for nights only and would not have bedding with us). Can anyone help with an itinerary or places to stay ?

You can stay in a houseboat in Charlestown (next to Boston).

Also, warfieldhouseinn.com for a farm stay in western Massachusetts. Also, you can stay in a lighthouse at Race Point Lighthouse in Provincetown.

Cardigan Lodge in the New Hampshire lakes region may be worth a look though it may be more "mainstream" than what you are after. It is run by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). AMC also has cabins on conservation land in remote areas of Maine. Another thought: Star Island on the Isle of Shoals in NH (look at personal retreats). Note that though I am a regular visitor to Cardigan, I have not stayed at the other places. A family staying at Cardigan told me about Star Island, a place they loved and visited annually for years.
