Ideas for a one night getaway in coastal Connecticut

My husband and I are looking for someplace to go for a one night getaway. We live in Southern Massachusetts so we were thinking of going to coastal Connecticut. We are looking for a nice place to stay in a nice area and a place to dine at night. We would like a nice area that you can walk around, maybe a couple things to see, since we will only be there for one day. Shopping is not important since we are on a budget. The budget for the room would be around $200 for the night. Thank you

You might want to look at the towns of Essex, Old Saybrook, Branford and Guiford.

I agree with brookerme re Mystic... you can probably find a hotel for your budgt on one of the travel search engines. I love S&P in Mystic or Dog Watch in Stonington for meals... if you have a strict budget, go for lunch when it is significantly cheaper, and just get a snack for dinner... we ate at Sea View for fried seafood... just a hot dog stand type of place, but food is good and nice view of the Mystic River. Cute shops in Mystick Village... no need to buy but fun to window-shop. I would check out Inn at Mystic to see if you qualify for a special rate... it is really a lovely complex.

MAYBE... just maybe Saybrook Pointe Inn (check Hotels.com) or Inn at Stonington. Otherwise as mentioned... Whalers Inn (Mystic) or The Griswold Inn in Essex...! All nice towns to walk

Madison Beach is a newly redone/renovated hotel... I have stayed at the "old" version. I had checked rates for October for a getaway, and even w/AAA it is over $200/night. I have stayed at Saybrook Point and it is also nice, but you will pay dearly for a waterfront room. The Griswold Inn is lovely for lunch or dinner... each dining room is unique. See what you can find in Mystic... good luck!
