Good areas to stay for 2 night stay near Mohegan Sun?

Hi I will be taking my parents to Mohegan Sun next week and trying to decide on where to book the hotel. My dad isn't that much into the Casino and I'm sure he'd appreciate staying near/exploring a town on the off-casino hours. I don't mind a modest drive to Mohegan if it puts us in a better location / neighborhood so long there's not that much traffic and under 1 hour ( my understanding is that Norwich/Uncasville will be the closest to Mohegan).

I usually use Priceline bidding and they list the following areas below. Which of these areas would be our best fit (decent proximity to the casino and attractions/things to do for my dad )?

Are there better options other than Mystic County within an hours drive that would fit our needs?

Groton

Ledyard (Mashantucket)

New London

Niantic

North Stonington

Norwich - Uncasville

Old Saybrook

I'd try to stay right in Mystic if I were you. There is more to do in Mystic than any of the other locations. The downtown area is very charming and you're an easy drive to Mohegan. I'd choose North Stonington next (closer to Foxwoods), then Norwich (closer to Mohegan).

Your father might also like to visit the Pequot Museum at Foxwoods. It is an excellent museum that covers the history of the local Native Americans. Foxwoods is a quick 15 minute drive from Mohegan using backroads. There is also an excellent golf course at Foxwoods if that interests your father.

Hope that helps.

Mystic is the better place to stay.. I would stay out by I-95 rather than downtown.

Groton has a Submarine Museum and there are several other battlefields and ramparts over viewing the rivers that you father may enjoy.

Good Speed Opera house area is cool to visit or stay and also the Middletown Area /Cromwell is right off of route 9 which is a direct route to 95.

In reality--you could make a big circle around the casinos and be able to stay anywhere within it and be able to get to the casinos without a long drive. Also the drives would be quite scenic anyway...candy for the eyes.

If you're using Priceline and trying to stay in Mystic you'd choose North Stonington or Groton from the choices you listed above. Mystic isn't actually a town. The area that we call Mystic is made up of parts of Groton on one side of the river and Stonington on the other.
