June-July National Parks road trip / western side of "Rocky"

Hello and thank you TA members for your valuable advice.

We will be flying into and out of Denver and heading first to Wyoming first for a business trip and Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Parks. We're in the process of routing from Yellowstone NP to Rocky Mountain NP. With 8-9 hours of driving and as yet unknown sights to see along the way, we have a open night between Yellowstone and our two night stay at YMCA of the Rockies Estes Park.

Should we try heading through Walden to Granby?

What are the conditions like on that highway (CO 125)?

Any other information and suggestions are appreciated!

Consider coming south to Craig, CO and on to spend a night in the cowboy town of Steamboat Springs. Fun resort town with great hotels and restaurants. Will be a fun stopover en route to RMNP.

Have fun.

Either route south from I-80 are fine in the summer. Coming down through Craig, or Walden are good. And they take about the same amount of time.

Both will offer great scenery.

You may see more wildlife coming through Walden. The area south of there is populated with moose, which sometimes are easily found.

Plan to spend the night in Grand Lake and then make the drive over Trail Ridge Road to Estes Park the next day. You will want an entire day to explore as you go. Walk the Colorado River Headwaters trail and look for moose. Look for the elk toward the top of Trail Ridge Road.

Safe travels!
