Between Morro Bay and Solvang, things to do

WHat are the things to do between Morro Bay and Solvang that shouldn't be miss?

I have 3days and 2 night between this places. One night will be in Solvang, the other night is still trying to find a nice place to go. Hearst Castle is on my list but what else other than the beaches and where else can I stay while on the way to Solvangfor another night? Santa Maria, Lompoc or Arroyo Grande?

Hard to give you ideas without more information. What do you like to do? Who's going? Do you have children? How old?

Do not stay in Santa Maria or Lompoc. Arroyo Grande is okay but since you are that close to the coast why not stay closer to the water in Pismo, Shell Beach, or Avila Beach.

In Pismo you can rent quads and ride on the beach & dunes (be careful). You can also take a hummer tour in the dunes. There are some decent golf courses in the area as well. You can rent horses in Oceano and take a guided horseback ride on the beach. If you like wine the the Santa Ynez Valley & Paso Robles area have some great wine you can taste.

Hearst Castle is north of Morro Bay. Solvang is south of Morro Bay. Hearst isn't between the two.

Morro Bay to Solvang is a 2 hour drive. The only significant points of interest between the two is San Luis Obispo, Pismo/Avila Beach, the Village of Arroyo Grande and the Los Olivos/Santa Ynez wine country. Otherwise, it's mostly an inland drive on fast moving highway through farm and ranch land.

Morro Bay to Pismo Beach is less than a 30 minute drive, BTW.

There is 8 of us, all adults from 48 ~55. We are driving in 2 cars. We are planning to do sight seeing and visiting places of interest. We are from Malaysia just wondering around California on our own, free and easy and would like to see some historical places, etc..Just wanting to avoid the big cities

We are driving down from SF, putting a night in Monterey, Morro Bay and Solvang and having another night spare without much idea left where to stay in between Morro Bay and Solvang. We will also be driving directly back to SF after Solvang

Gdude, Noted on your advise,. What is the reason not to stay in Santa Maria or Lompoc? Expensive or just another city? Is it alright to visit? Will check on the places listed. Thank you.

Kibblesmom...thank you for your advise. Will check it out.

Santa Maria and Lompoc are not desirable areas. There is nothing in either of them of little interest to a tourist and they both are enduring an escalation in crime as of late.

There is stuff the see/do in the towns of San Luis Obispo (15 minutes from Morro Bay), Pismo Beach or Avila Beach. These are far better places to spend your time in than Santa Maria or Lompoc.

You could either spend a second night in Morro Bay and visit Montana de Oro to the south or continue on to either Pismo Beach or Avila Beach. Solvang is about a 45 minute drive from Pismo.

Does your stay in Solvang include a visit down to Santa Barbara, via Lake Cachuma? It's a lovely drive, and the views of the ocean and City of SB are very pretty.

The Santa Barbara Mission is one of the most beautiful of the 21 missions along the CA coast. It's called Queen of the Missions and a few blocks from State St.

Go shopping along State Street that runs to the ocean. Stroll down both sides of the street, check out Paseo Nuevo. Have lunch on Stearns Wharf, you can drive right on it, and park your car. Harbor Restaurant has some delicious seafood and great views. At the end is SB Shellfish Co. for some casual dining.

Both Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo have important missions, and there is also a mission La Purisima out in the country which has been very well restored historically. Its a lovely spot although I have heard that the visitor center is closed due to budget reasons.
