Hi there,

I'm planning a leisurely one-week driving trip--starting/end point, San Francisco--and I was wondering if it's worth visiting both Humboldt Redwoods State Park *and* RNP. I've read through the other posts regarding the two parks, and it seems like RNP has a little more to offer, but is there any reason I should spare a day for Humboldt? I do have the time, I think. I just don't want to feel like it's a repeat, though, and that I could have visited another nearby town/location for a more varied vacation--e.g., Medford/Ashland, Mt. or Lake Shasta, etc.

Thanks!

Lake Shasta is very low this year & consequently a bit ugly so Skip it unless you want to do Castle Crags, Mount Shasta Etc.

Yes, I agree, one of the Redwoods would be enough. Have you considered Mendocino area? It's not too far from S.F. and some of the surrounding area is beautiful. There is also the wine country if you are into wine. There are usually lots of tourists, unless you go to Sonoma, which is usually less crowded. Calistoga is nice if like spas and massages, plus a nice downtown area. All these places have great restaurants too.

HR State Park is inland. Most people do the Avenue of the Giants drive and then move on. There is a nice drive through what is called the Lost Coast area.

Redwood National Park encompasses several smaller SP's, and stretches for about 50 miles or so along the coast. There are big lagoons, elk, beautiful coastal views, the wild Klamath River, and of course huge trees. The Newton P Drury scenic drive (old hwy 101) is lovely.

Ashland is a fairly pleasant, upscale town with the Shakespeare festival. Medford is a city.

I just want to add that our daytrip along Lost Coast and the visit to Humboldt Redwoods SP was terrific and some fantastic places not only along Avenue of the Giants but also on the side roads. Don't want to confuse you tho...

I stopped for a short hike last year at Founder's Grove on the Ave of the Giants before doing the Lost Coast drive and I would recommend it on your way to or from RNP--it doesn't take long and it's right off 101. I also did a number of hikes in RNP and still thought the Founders Grove trail was worth doing.
