Restaurant recommendations in Picton, please.

We will be in Picton in February before and after the QCT walk and are looking for some input on restaurant recommendations.

Price isn't as important as good food and wine - within reason ;-)

We are looking for somewhere where we can get seafood, venison, and, of course some fine Malborough wines. We are flexible on the food choices, but not the wine.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks, in anticipation of your help.

Nearly all the restaurants in Picton close early. As a result we selected the Barn in the middle of town as the place for dinner. Great ambience and good food. We had green lipped mussels, a selection of seafood and we shared a bottle of white wine. The food and wine were excellent. It is nearly impossible to find a bad NZ wine. If it is bad it is invariably an imported wine.

Picton is not a really big place, rather a bustly village. All the Restaurants are within walking distance of each other. However if you have a car you may like to try one of the Blenheim vineyards about 1/2 hour away.

Thank you Westlondoner and NZMike for your responses.

Green lipped mussels are a favorite of ours and I do agree with you about the quality of NZ wines.

'Bustly village' sounds perfect.

We are primarily visiting NZ this time to do the QCT walk. We will be starting our trip in Christchurch to visit relatives - and see the results of the earthquakes - the better half is from Christchurch . Then we travel by train to Picton for one night before the walk and two nights after. After that we head up to Wellington and home.

We are planning on a day of wine-tasting on the free day but since none of us is prepared to be a designated driver we will be doing a tour (a question for another thread perhaps?) so we won't have a car. Hence the question about restaurants in Picton - we will be staying at the Harbour View Motel so I presume it's all withing walking distance?

Thanks again.

Picton is very small so everywhere is within walking distance. I would suggest walking around and having a look at the menus displayed in their windows to see which one appeals. Most of the restaurants are in High Street with some in the next one over, Wellington Street. Some of the hotels also have a restaurant.

Oh, that didn't work. Cut and paste the whole link into your brower and it will list restaurants in Picton and reviews.

another option (albeit im guessing youve already been and gone lol!) is the dinner cruise to www.lochmaralodge.co.nz

$85 per person and includes water transport to this amazing lodge...round 15 min cruise across queen charlotte sound...and also includes a main course...incredible venue and gorgeous food, wine and service
