Tavira nightlife

We are thinking of staying in Tavira in September. We have previously stayed in Carvoeiro. Would Tavira be of a similar size. I can see that there are plenty of resataurants to choose from but what about bars? Are there many bars/discos, we will have an 18 and a 21 year old with us.

It looks like you will not be coming to Tavira this year which is a shame, it is wonderful. As all the other posts suggest there are plenty of bars and plenty of night life if you know where to find it. I have been living in Tavira now for 3 years. It is better to come in August. Ubi is an open air night club which doesnt really get going to after 2.00am and when I went I didnt get home till 6.00am !! I think it closes at the end of September. There is also the Meeting Room and another club under the main bridge in town but for the life of me I cant remember what it is called. Pink Flamingo is a late bar which is good to go to first then head off to the clubs. No way is Tavira going the same way as Albuferia, in fact you really wouldnt know that these clubs existed if you were not local! You can find them all on Facebook.

Just wondering if all the restaurants and bars are still open the last week of October or do they close up?

Hi,

You could stay in Tavira, and the one's that want nightlife could get the late train from Tavira to Faro, and then get the early train back to Tavira the following morning.

Hi Kevin,

Sorry I've not been on here recently so I've only just seen your post. Most of the bars mentioned on the insider pages are definitely suitable for any age group! I visited Tavira in May and there have been a few changes (new places opening, old places closing etc.) so I do need to update the pages but not had chance yet. I will do this as soon as possible.

Until I get chance to do that, if you have any specific questions I will try my best to help!

There are plenty of places to go! I've had to find them myself, as information on the internet seems to be outdated or non existent, but thought i'd post this to save people some time.

This is based on my visit the other week, Mid July 2012, and also some background from 2011.

Pink Flamingo (bar)

A personal favourite, down towards the "new bridge" over the river, just by the ferry service to Tavira Island (beach) - This is a really great, modern bar - run by a really nice couple (I think Brazillian and Norwegian), who went out of their way to look after us and made awesome Mojitos. Really worth a visit, open all day until late, chilled out bar music, nice vibe, well priced!

Riverside Bar (bar)

On the opposite side of the river to the main square, over the rickety looking bridge and straight away on the left. This was formerly known as the mad hatter, again run by a very nice couple, english and i'm told serve awesome pies (didn't get a chance to sample). Loads of english drinks available to cater for the tourist trade and not overpiced either.

The Funny Dutch (bar)

This is just behind the riverside bar, the bar has changed hands since my last visit, sadly the previous owners have had to sell up for personal reasons but there was a very welcoming dutch lady on our last visit, serving Heineken as it wold be done in Holland! Quirky little place, friendly, prices are good. Seems to only be open in the evenings.

Australia (bar)

This has changed hands too, the pub can be found within 5 mins walk of riverside/the funny dutch. Went here a couple of years ago and it was run and used by mainly portuguese. Last year I found it to be closed but on my most recent visit I think the previous owner of the mad hatter has taken it on. Good mix of people, token portuguese old boys sipping on super bock and tourists popping in too, really good mix and nice place, indoor and outdoor seating and inside it's chilled down by air-con.

The Irish Bar (Black Anchor) (bar/restaurant)

This can be found along the river front up passed the roman bridge and through the alleyway. Massive outside seating area with food service, inside a traditional irish full wooden bar - quite impressive! English based menue, prices are reasonable, English TV on in the bar, caters more for the tourist trade than locals but a nice place, friendly staff.

The Meeting Rooms (club)

Not been here since 2011 as It was closed when I went this time, but i'm assured it's still open. Easiest way to describe it is at the opposite end of the "new" bridge to the pink flamingo, near Pingo Doce supeprmarket, opposite the travelling market site down a side road. On the last visit had a really good night, it's a club not a bar like all of the above, I think I left around 4:30 and it was still going strong! Worth a look if it's a club you're looking for, good mix of Portuguese and Tourists.

General

There are a couple more chilled out bars in some of the sidestreets (can't remember the names i'm afraid) - at the end of the roman bridge as you walk from the main town directly in front, and another in between Australia and The Funny Dutch. Chilled out, friendly, background music,

In additon to this somwhere i've never been but keep getting told of is Ubi's - by all accounts this is still open and i'm lead to beleive it's actually built in the end of the bridge by the pink flamingo end. By all accounts it's ok.

In Summary, Tavira is no Albufeira, but it's a totally dirrerent beast. There is no "strip" but there is still nightlife in existance. All the above bars serve food too.

During the day a visit to Tavira Beach is wel worthwhile and there are several bar/cafes on the island to use, XiRi right on the beach front I found to be really good, all sorts of seating arrangments and have everything you could want

Hope this helps, Enjoy!

John.

I am going to Tavira in June. Chosen because it seems to be a little piece of the "real Algarve". However, I know Lagos well and it is a lovely town but definitely not the place for Clubbers, although it does have some pretty lively bars in the centre which might suit the younger members of the party.
