You could do it by public transport, but it means buses, trains, or combination thereof.....circa 7 hours

Look at the website below - from Mikulov to Cesky Krumlov

If you are staying in Prague and intend to return to Prague, maybe a car hire would be the best option.

Thanks for your response. We have decided to rather rent a car to drive to Mikoluv and then to Cesky Krumlov. We have 8 days to spend in the country side. Can you suggest any other villages/areas that we MUST see? We are planning to spend 2 days in Mikulov to cycle some wine routes and then 2 days in Cesky Krumlov to just enjoy the environement and to do some hiking. Where to from there? Up to West Bohemia and North Bohemia?

Here is a route you can do tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g190454-i147-k2769…

You can easily stretch this journey to a couple of days.

Brno is of course another 'must-see' but a car is no good to you - parking in the centre is pretty much non-existent, or expensive, and I get the impression that you want to miss out cities.

Then if you want to go north from CK, I suppose some 'must-sees' include Litomyšl http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Litomy%C5%A1l or Nové Město nad Metují novemestonm.cz/user_data/… for example - both have wonderful castles and are IMO preferable to Český Krumlov, which has unfortunately succumbed to tourism. it is still beautiful, but not my cup of tea. Also Adršpach http://www.adrspach.com/ for a bit of hiking.

Couple of ideas for you here as well http://www.zamky-hrady.cz/index-e.htm

When are you planning to travel in the Czech Republic? As far as Cesky Krumlov is concerned, it is a very good idea to spend the night because as GCEK was mentioning, the town can get busy around noon for a few hours with tourist groups. The majority of the groups leave by 4PM so when you are spending the night, you will get to see the town without the crowds. Of course if you come in March, you are likely to have the town to yourselves.

Litomysl is certainly a good suggestion.

We will be there from 25 May for 15 days, this includes 6 days in Prague. I love the 'romantic road' suggestion. It seems that we should consider spending all our time in south moravian and bohemia. Less traveling and more time to really experience the area.
