Train to St Petersberg

I read somewhere there is a direct train connection from Vilnius to St Petersberg. Is that true, and where can I find a timetable/price please?

It is true, but it is a long distance and takes ages. If you need to buy it, however, you should do this in the train station.

Direct train (actually it's only a few carriages) doesn't really take ages, just a regular overnight train (20:40-8:18), which is a common thing in case of Eastern Europe and Russia. As of today tickets start from roughly 2000 RUB (3rd class), 4000 RUB (2nd class, 4 bed compartment) or almost 800 RUB (1st class, 2 bed compartment). Towards the holidays prices are a bit higher due to seasonal coefficient

That is very useful, thank you.

Not having any previous experience of such a journey, are there any safety/security concerns on this overnight train?

Will meals be available/included?

Nothing to worry about safety, just a general universal precautions as you would follow in England or elsewhere. Plus there is a conductor monitoring that nobody from the street without a ticket walks in and wonders around the wagon

Meals aren't included, but every conductor have a minimal snacks/tea/coffee in the carriage and also there is a restoran-wagon where you can get a decent meal, might be not the cheapest one, but still.

http://www.litrail.lt/ >> you can find the schedule, but it isn't very comfortable, for real. The remarks in the schedule is only in Lithuanian. You even can't book the ticket online.

Better with bus, faster and more comfortable. Also you can book online, get real prices and real times, all in English.

http://ecolines.net/ >> possible choice. The cheapest in this region.

With bus you would go through Riga and Tallinn.
