Where to go from Budapest?

Adult daughter and I have 2.5 days to spend in another city/area. Since it's a short time, we'd prefer a shortish (5 hours or less) train ride and direct flight. We've just been to Prague, Vienna, and Bratislava. Had hoped for Ljubljana but that appears to be a 9-hour train ride, and an even longer flight. I like natural beauty, but will be happy with an interesting city. Thanks for any ideas you can give me.

By train you can reach in less than 5 hours:

Hungary: Pécs (2.5 days are not too much for Pécs), Szeged, Debrecen.

Out of Hungary: Brno (Czech rep.), High Tatras in Slovakia (destination city: Poprad).

By plane you can fly everywhere in Europe within ~2 hours, Cheap flights are operated mainly by Ryanair and Wizzair. Typical bargain destinations are Bergamo by Milano and Treviso by Venice (Ryanair), and Tirgu Mures (Marosvásárhely) in Romania (Wizzair).

Easyjet fly to Paris in 2 hours....but Pecs is a charming place, and is the centre of Hungary's best wine producing region.

I'd second Pecs myself. If by 'natural beauty' you are thinking of mountains, Hungary isn't really the place. OTOH, Pecs is definitely an interesting city.

I'd also have a look at Sopron. While the city itself may not be worth 2.5 days, there are hiking trails into the Loverek forest that might be of interest.

Pécs is indeed an interesting city. It has beautiful architecture and lots of museums and exhibitions. The highlights are the two former mosques left from the times of the Ottoman conquest plus an early Christian necropolis dating back to the Roman age. If you choose this city, you can easily spend one or two days there.

An other option would be Eger, which also has lots of things to see.

In the Lake Balaton area, Tihany, Keszthely and Badacsony are frequently visited.

All of the listed places are easily accessible from Budapest via public transportation.
