Euro VS Hungarian Forint

Hi Guys

A friend and I are travelling to Budapest this weekend and having read some review we are not quite sure whether or not to take Euro's or Hungarian Forint.... Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance all.

Please refer to the 'Top questions about Budapest' on the right hand side of this page - second one down.

Use Euros as you would in London.

Really the worst thing you could do is convert Pounds to Euros and then convert Euros to Forint. Take your Pounds to Hungary and then convert them at a much more favorable rate into Forint.

For those from the US and the UK (at least) the cashpoint (ATM) is not necessarily a better option than bringing cash and converting at an exchange bureau (other than the bureaus at the airport or train station, which are exorbitant in their costs) ... you have to know what charges your bank at home will impose. Mine, for example, charges a 3% transaction fee, while these days I can get an exchange at an exchange bureau for less than 1% total, including the tiny commission. The important thing to bear in mind is that what will work best for you will mostly depend on variables at home, not in Budapest.

The Budapest end of the transaction -- withdrawal at an ATM, use of a credit card, or exchange at an exchange bureau -- will be almost cost free (if at an ATM or using a Visa or MasterCard, it will take place at the wholesale exchange rate, which is extremely close to the daily midpoint; at an exchange bureau it will be at the posted rate, and with a tiny bit of shopping you can find a bureau, as I noted, that quotes rates of less than 1% or so these days). But your home bank may impose costs on credit card or ATM use abroad that totally change the equation. Similarly, your home sources for currency exchange could conceivably be competitive. While very few US or UK exchange bureaus or banks can compete with that 1% or less cost in Budapest, there are some people with special banking or foreign exchange relationships at home who can indeed beat that rate, and do so conveniently. So, at the end of the day, it's mostly about how your finances are set up at home.

For your future information - Euros are not accepted in the UK. The GBP £ is the currency.

Precisely the point of the thread - the hungarian currency is the Forint, not the EUR, or GBP, or the USD.

You don't know that London and the UK uses Pounds? Not Euros.
