Things to do

We are thinking of going to Slovenia for our honeymoon in June 2006. We like the look of Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj. We are keen hikers so these locations look ideal but we also want a place which has a choice of restaurants and bars. Please could someone advise us on the best place. Also Is there many things to see and do as we are going to be staying for 2 weeks?

Bled is a pretty little place, but might wear a bit thin if you're there for 2 weeks. The walking in Slovenia is great. I haven't been to Bohinj, but it is quite remote and there's probably even less to do.

Have you considered Kransjka Gora? It's a nice place, loads of good walking and it's easier to get yourselves elsewhere, eg Ljubljana on the public bus, or over the border into Italy, or to Bled for the day.

Before you book a half board deal, it's worth considering there are some great places to eat and you will find it very reasonable indeed.

I stayed at Hotel Zlatarog at Lake Bohinj in June. Great hotel with good food and a newish swimming pool. Its' situated at the far end of the lake and though the walking is fantastic there is no nightlife, bars or restaurants. Jezero, 4kms along the lake has a few restaurants and bars but nothing to get worked up about. I went to Bled which is far busier and might suit you if you want a good selection of places to eat. I personally found Bled too busy and couldn't wait to get back to the peace of Bohinj. Eating and drinking out is quite cheap. I travelled round the country within about a 50 mile radius of Bohinj and found the place as yet unspoilt by commercialism. For how much longer? Get down to the wine growing area near the coast, it's like Tuscany!

Bohinj is beautiful and dramatic with plenty of varied walking. Very romantic setting for a honeymoon but no bars or restaurants to speak of. Did not like Bled at all as you get no feel of being in the natural countryside, more like a large manicured park. Full of old English tourists sitting on the benches reading!!

We combined a week in the tranquillity of Bohinj with a week in Kranjska Gora, which is much more lively with plenty of good restaurants and bars. Good walking and spectacular scenery with the backdrop of the Julian Alps.

For a 2 week stay I think this two centre option is best.

Hi

We went to Slovenia for our honeymoon last June! I would definately recommend it, and as others have said, Bled is busier but Bohinj is very quiet. Both are gorgeous! My advice would be to hire a car and then have a few days staying in Bled so you are there for the evenings but can get out & about during the day. Bled also has a nice casino if that interests you in the evening time. And go to the castle overlooking the Lake Bled for an evening meal - tell them you are on honeymoon and they will give you the best table with a wonderful view! If you're into walking, you could walk from Bled to Vintar Gorge - amazing place. (we cycled though - too lazy on our feet!) I would also agree with the others too, try a 2 centre holiday if you;re going for 2 weeks. We went for 10 days and spent 3 in the South (Terme Catez - spa complex and also enabled us to visit Zagreb) and then a week in Bled but with a hire car. If you are looking for a romantic place to stay in Bled I can recommend the Alp Pension - much more character than the bigger hotels. And a wonderful breakfast!!!

Hotel Jezero at Bohinj is really nice. You can get a room with a beautiful view onto the lake in the new wing, and the beds and bathrooms are excellent. I highly recommend it.

Bohinj is probably more beautiful than Bled, but both are nice, and Bled is a little more connected to everything else in Slovenia. But remember Slovenia is a tiny country so nothing is very far away from anything else. 2 weeks might be too much by the way, I'd look into slotting a visit to Austria in.
