Hi, having read some previous posts, I want to be sure about using a US bank debit card to get cash at ATMs in Prague - I get the impression that it is like most of Europe and very simple. Is that right?

What I couldn't find - is there an ATM at the airport or should I have currency with me when I land for taxis, etc.?

Another question - what time to the supermarkets and local shops in central Prague close on Saturdays? Are they open on Sundays? We don't arrive until late in the afternoon on a Saturday and are self-catering so will need fresh food such as milk, eggs, cheese, etc. for breakfast. Do we need to see if the agency will do some shopping for us?

Many thanks!

There are plenty of ATMs in both terminals and they are no different to those in the rest of europe. Most of the banks here are in foreign hands (German, Austrian, Belgian etc) and the technology is all the same.

Many shops are open 24 hours and the Czechs are quite secular so Sunday opening hours are not discernably different to the rest of the week. If you give more information about where you are staying we can make more specific recomemendations.

Saturdays and Sundays are generally shutdown days for that type of thing, but don't worry - the Tesco supermarket on Narodni trida is open until 9pm and you can get the basics there, or the Tesco hypermarket in Novy Smichov (Andel metro station) is open until midnight - you can get absolutely everything there. There are also some 'večerka' shops dotted around, but they generally require some knowledge of the language. By all means ask the agency to put some stuff in the fridge for you - it shouldn't be too much of an onerous task for them, after all, you are paying them good money :)

You might have to eat out the first night - but read the posts about doing that in the centre - it can be quite hit and miss and is always best to venture out of the centre a bit for that.

ATMs in the Czech Republic are exactly the same as they are everywhere else in Europe. You just need a four-digit PIN number and there you go. Your bank might charge a fee, but check with them first.

There are ATMs at the airport - get everything you need when you arrive. There is no real point taking any with you, unless you really want to be sure. In that case, $100 should be more than enough for 'emergencies'.

Hope this helps!

... maybe Prague is a bit different at weekends, but in Brno it is difficult to find anything open on Saturday afternoons and Sundays!

Hello and many thanks for your very rapid replies! We are staying in Prague but haven't finalized which apartment yet. I will post the area when we know it so that I can take advantage of your kind offer to give us some ideas for late Saturday shopping.

Thanks again! Have a great rest of the evening and a great weekend!

GCEK you made this statement that has me curious.

"ATMs in the Czech Republic are exactly the same as they are everywhere else in Europe. You just need a four-digit PIN number and there you go. Your bank might charge a fee, but check with them first."

I have an Italian debit card that has more then 4 digit pin number and have not problem with it in Italy...are you saying that I will have trouble with it in Prague or other countries?

Hi, is the Novy Smichov the shopping center I see on the map near to the Andel metro station? Thanks!

VeniceJ - I've no idea about that! I've only ever heard of four-figure PIN numbers, and I have a feeling that you can only enter four figures in the machine. You might need to check with your bank.

Remember seeing this question before and after a little searching found this site recommended by sova,

http://www.livingprague.com/htatm.htm Dont say exactly how common these "smart" ATM's are but I'm sure the Airport's should be,and at least all ATM's I have seen in Prague has English as an optional Language.
