Ronda or Malaga in December

we will be in Spain mid-December and had originally planned an overnight stay at the paradour in Ronda. It was suggested that Ronda would be freezing and icy at that time of year. I'm disappointed because I really wanted to stay there and see Ronda, but would like suggestions. However, I only had one night scheduled there, and one night in Granada, and now I'm wondering if it would be better to spend those two nights in Malaga, see the Christmas lights, and do a day trip to Ronda - not move around so much.

Thank you.

I think you would be better staying in Malaga at night anyway, Ronda is very quiet in the winter, and all the shops still shut for siesta anyway. A day trip should be perfect, sometimes the road from San Padro up to Ronda is closed for ice at the top of the mountain pass, but usually only for a day or two in Jan/Feb. I am sure wherever you stay in Malaga the hotel can check for you to ensure there are no problems with a day trip. The road is now much better, it does wind, but the views especially going up to Ronda are spectacular. You must also see Granada, it will also be cold as it is near the Sierra Nevada, but it is motorway all the way. You may still want to stay overnight in Granada so you will have time to see The Alhambra with the Generalife, and the Albaicin & main city sights the other day. Those Christmas lights in Malaga are superb.

Thank you Alanin...I have read many of your posts (I've read a lot on these forums lately!) and have found your advice very helpful. If you don't mind...please look at my itinerary and give me your input. My husband and I are travelling w/our two grown children and they voted for a day trip to Morocco....so I've had to plan accordingly. We still don't want to move too much....so tell me what you think.

Arrive Sevilla - stay two nights.

Drive to Tarifa - stop in Jerez de la Frontera or some of those towns along the way.

Stay two nights in Tarifa - Day trip to Morocco in that time period

Drive to Malaga stay one night

Train to Granada - stay one night

Train to Madrid - stay last night (my son really wanted to spend last night in Madrid...there is a nightclub he wants to take his sister to)

I'm concerned about the three "single night" stays. Am wondering if we should stay two nights in Malaga.

Thank you for you assistance. It is really hard w/only 7 nights, there is so much!

So I looked at the train map and now I'm wondering if Cordoba would be a better choice than Granada and we could take the high speed train to Madrid...the train from Granada may take too long. I had thought about Cordoba initially, but chose Granada instead. What do you think?

I think you are trying to do too much. You'll spend all your time on the road.

There is a place between Ronda/Malaga/Granada (with a heated pool & jacuzzi) which would be good - http://www.laposadadeltorcal.com/intro.htm so you could do day trips from there easily.

In Seville - arab baths are superb. http://www.airedesevilla.com/nbanos.htm

Or Jerez http://www.hotelbellasartes.com/ http://www.hammamandalusi.com/index2-eng.html

You could table the train from Malaga - Madrid.

I think the previous poster is right as far as trying to ram in everything in a short time. For the trip to Morocco from Tarifa for the day will have to be done with either a tour company as a whistle stop trip around Tangiers, or you can go on foot via the ferry. I do not know of any car hire company that will allow you to take the car to Morocco because of the insurance problems.

I can not help you with the trains as I rarely use them, but more experienced members will guide you. You can look up the timetables on the Renfe ( Spanish train company) on the web so you can plan a route in advance.
