is it really worth doing a trip cairns to fraser in early fab or wil we just be washed out? what should we be prepared for?

Be prepared for anything as we have been in a drought and now it's raining all the time, however generally the rain isn't that bad that it stops you doing things. If there are any cyclones up north then there is the chance of flooding, otherwise the weather should be OK.

Hi Alish, if anything it will be humid and a little sticky. The rain if anything tends to cool things down and it usually isn't constant. Lived in Darwin for years and we actually looked forward to the afternoon storms. As mentioned, our weather is just a little weird at the moment!

Hi Alish,

The rainy season is called wet season (approx Dec March/April), and is applicable for all places located in the tropics. The wet season also means cyclone season, and that is what you have to be aware of when travelling anywhere in the tropics.

If there's a trough nearby, yes expect rain for a few days. If there is a "tropical low system" hovering about you will also get a lot of rain strong winds. Tropical low systems can form into a cyclone.

If there is no trough, tropical low or a cyclone anywhere along the coast you might get some rain anyway, but most of the time it is short showers and then the sun comes out again in 20 minutes time.

We had some rain last year in the Dry Season (May November) in June, July and August, so it is an impossible question to answer. With any trip we take, there is always a chance of some rain at any time throughout the year.

Try not to think about it too much!

www,bom.gov.au is a great site where you can see three day forecasts and also read about any warnings regarding cyclones, tropical lows and flooding.

A lot of tourists visit tropical areas in the wet season and have a great time and great weather. It is warm and humid from dec-feb. In March too, if you go further north.

Hope this info helps you a little bit.

A positive side about travelling in north Queensland during this time is that the forests and all the islands are very lush and green.

Just trying to cheer you up a bit. Think positive!:)
