From what I've heard Las Terrenas is a safe place, so this is mostly for my bf. When I travel I like to experience the local culture and hang out with locals-- this is why I have never been to an all inclusive yet. My boyfriend's idea of "seeing the world" is going to Florida, so to compromise we decided to book an all inclusive in a non-touristy area that would allow us to explore off-resort. I want him to see that the rest of the world isn't like North America.
Anyways, he is terrified of the thought of going off resort, thinking that everyone is out to rob us, murder us, etc. He doesn't believe me when I say we'll be fine because he thinks I'm a reckless traveller (I went to Lebanon a couple years ago despite travel warnings, but all was well), so I think he needs to hear it from people who have actually been there.
I know to take precautions-- don't carry a ton of money, don't flash money around, don't roam alone, don't rock the bling, I'm not going to wear anything revealing, etc. I know enough Spanish to get by.
What are some good places to visit in town? I've seen One Love and La Bodega mentioned in forums. I also heard that there is a good cigar place in town but I never got a name for it. Any other suggestions?
Also, I'm really into photography and I prefer to use my SLR despite it being the ultimate tourist identification. I also have a tiny camera that I take when it's not appropriate/convenient to lug the SLR around. Which do you suggest I take when exploring the town?
I really appreciate any help/advice that you can offer!Edited: 2:22 pm, February 21, 2013
