Overpriced & Tourist Trap

Unfortunately unlike most other New Zealand cities, this one has fell into the 'tourist trap' category. Overpriced souvenir stores line the main street and clothing is marked up compared to similar stores in Queenstown and Christchurch.

I would strongly recommend avoiding this place until the local government cleans up its act, promotes Arrowtown as a historical community based on the gold rush and not simply a tourist trap stop on the way to Queenstown.

Yes, Arrowtown motels were also dearer than Queenstown last month (3 adults), so we gave it a miss. I have been there many times when we lived in NZ and can relate to the Hahndorf comparison, being the only place in that list I have seen. Doesn't worry us what they charge. If the market bears it, one should charge as much as possible. :)

We had three weeks to drive across NZ and knew locals so buying souvenirs at good prices was easy. For example, frosted glass coasters are flavour of the year and generally go for $39 give or take depending on whether you want paua shell designs or not. At Uncle Bill's in Wellington, they were less than $10. But no tourist would know to go there.

Whew....As an Aussie who lived 13 years in NZ...11 in Rotorua...and you do not get more touristy than that....I would like to say that my wife and I visited Arrowtown November 2009.

I am in late 60s and have travelled to many places.....never will get to them all but any tourist who expects "bargains" in Tourist areas.....ain't been nowhere !!!!!

Most Tourist areas in Oz and NZ sell A grade products so us tourists will not be able to say we bought poor quality goods.....probably do not mention priceMust admit I was somewhat amazed at prices....but hey.....go to a boutique shop back home and compare

No No No not Walmart Target etc

Always enjoy travel.....buy what I want if reasonably priced.....most things are !!!

PS NZ South Island HAS TO BE THE COMPACT SCENERY DESTINATION OF THE WORLD TRUE

New Zealand is the most gorgeous and friendly country I have ever visited and had the pleasure of seeing. My opinion of Arrowtown was in comparison to the other destinations I had visited on the island and yes I held it to a higher standard. That said, it's in beautiful surroundings, I felt it was touristy but no, it wasn't a tourist trap in the sense of Niagara Falls, Ontario by any stretch. Just thought I'd make that clarification. Cheers to you all and if you're planning a trip, enjoy it! :)

Just goes to show that what one person considers trash, is another persons treasure. It all depends what you are looking for at the end of that rainbow.

Interesting comment..

Arrowtown isn't the first NZ stop for most tourists and it probably isn't the last.

It seems to me that many people will shop elsewhere first then experience Arrowtown, which we happen to like.

In retail market pricing determines if something is too expensive. If tourists don't buy then stores will close, a matter of simple economics.

No one is forcing you to buy anything in Arrowtown. We found items in one Arrowtown shop that were priced well below other stops in Queesntown and Auckland. Of course we saw items equal to or more expensive.

You always have the option to spend your money elsewhere rather than expecting the government to intervene in this non-problem.
