Campervan hire

I am visiting Australia in November and want to travel from Sydney to Hervey Bay but see things along the way. Can anyone recommend a campervan hire company that operate between these locations? Pretty much all of them are available from Sydney but not many can be dropped off in Hervey Bay

Not too sure about that one. You may have to do your thing in Hervey Bay and drop it back to Brisbane or drop it in Brisbane with alternative transport to H.B

When you google it a huge list comes up but when you actually go to one of the websites Hervey Bay is never an option

Can't find a closer drop off than Bris. It'd be a shame to forego the Sydney to Brisbane leg though

Hi

Why a campervan ?? Australia has fabulous caravan parks with self catering cabins so IMO u are better to just hire a 2WD & drive up the coast. See links below.

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g255055-c3001/Austral…

All of the major car rentals allow drop offs from Sydney to Hervey bay Airport.

Are u planning to visit Fraser Island ?? If so you can only take a 4WD over as its a sand island.

Just to clarify the post above ...

You can only take 4WDs across to Fraser Island that are specifically rented to do so ... you CANNOT take a 4WD that you have hired from Sydney (or other locations from major rental companies) to Fraser Island - there are specific exclusion clauses in your rental agreements that do not allow you to drive on unpaved roads or specifically to visit Fraser Island.

If you have hired a vehicle (4WD or otherwise) elsewhere to get to Hervey Bay (or Rainbow Beach), if you wish to self-drive Fraser Island you will need to hire a 4WD in Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach to visit the island.

Thankyou for these replies. We are going on an organised tour of Fraser Island and being picked up from Hervey Bay, otherwise I'd be happy to drop the vehicle off in Brisbane. The reason behind hiring a campervan was that we could just travel each day until we feel the need to stop and there seem to be a lot of sites along the way where you just rent the pitch. Is this not cheaper than hiring a car AND paying for a bed each night along the way?

Depends on how many are travelling. If there are just two of you then the cost will be about the same, if you use unpowered sites. If there are more than two the van will be cheaper. It would be a shame to pass up the van though. November is excellent weather wise and the unpowered sites are invariably in better spots. Some of the National Parks offer great sites only metres from the beach. The Brisbane/Hervey Bay leg makes it a tough call though

Hi,

What you propose may be cheaper if you hire a rent a wreck such as Wicked which is an old van with a foam sheet to sleep on.

If you do your sums with the hire of a "real" Motor Home from a reputable company the fees, insurance and one way rental would usually make it cheaper to hire a small car and stay in on site cabins at caravan parks or a hostels. If you are under 25 the insurance fees would make it cheaper to stay in resorts!!

Please do a search here on TA for Wicked and Apollo you will find some less than happy posters. What is a reputable company you ask. One of the majors with good reviews.

Cheers,

Thanks again for your responses. I have tried wicked and Apollo. Wicked had Hervey Bay in their list a few weeks ago but now it seems to have disappeared from their website. We were just really looking forward to the whole experience of hiring a campervan rather than a car. Doesn't seem as fun somehow. But I will look into it

Would it be more expensive to do a campervan as far as Brisbane and then hire a car for the rest of the journey?
