Take a trip out to Whangarei Heads. A very scenic drive. Lots of beaches and walks in the area. Certainly Ocean Beach is worth a trip.
If your interested in museum there is:
The Claphams Clock Museum at the Town Basin.
Reyburn House and the Whangarei Art Museum.
The Town Basin, is a nice place to visit, especially for lunch, a few nice cafe's there.
For the children there is Serendipity Farm Park where they can interact with different animals. Very popular with our childern.
Hi, I can't comment on accommodation as I am a provider myself but have put together lots of information on things to do in the Whangarei area on my website that will help you to plan your trip. There are some day trip driving itineraries on there as well which might help if you aren't sure how much time to allow and the extent of the activities available.
Have a look at http://www.luptonlodge.co.nz/northland.htm for activities and links to activity related sites around Whangarei. And www.luptonlodge.co.nz/tour_of_northland.htm for the driving tours (self-drive) which include Tutukaka Coast, Whangarei Heads and Bay of Islands.
Whangarei is an amazing area with loads to do depending on what your interests are. The Tutukaka Coast is an absolute must though - the beaches are just outstanding.
I went to a great beach out of Whangarei, up the coast a bit. It was called Whale Bay, and you parked in a car park and then walked through the bus to it. A perfect crescant(sp?) shaped bay. Just be careful what you leave in the car - there are warning signs about break-ins.
Hi Breakawayretreat ...thanks...My family(seniors and kiddies) will be travelling from Auckland to Whangarei(stay for a night) then proceed to Waitomo... Agrodome and SheepWorld are now tentatively in my itinerary...in regards to all these farms ie. Agrodome, Serendipity, etc....which actually is more worth visiting..thanks
Serendipity is a small farm park where kids can see cows, sheep, goats, alpacas, chickens etc etc.
Agrodome & Sheepworld are large 'themed' parks where you can watch sheep shearing, feed sheep & lambs etc.
So which one is worth going to very much depends on what kind of thing you are after.
At Serendipity they also give you bag of food to feed the animals as you walk around the park, the kids can hold the rabbits, hand feed the alpacas, ostriches, ponies, pigs, guinea pigs, sheep, goats, and chickens. Its great for children who love being up and close with animals. There is also a cafe on site.
As Andy mentioned the others are themed parks really focusing on Sheep, sheep shearing, feeding lambs.
Its really a personal preference for you and your family.
Thank you 'Lupton Lodge' and 'Breakawayretreat'...
