Stay in Launceston or further north??

Hi all - we (with our 2 chn aged 7 & 9 )are planning a 16 day trip to Tassie in January with our caravan.. Along the way we would like to check out the area around Launceston / Tamar Valley etc. We are interested in going to seahorse world, Platypus house, Beaconsfield, maybe doing a Tamar river cruise and Cataract Gorge.

My question is - should we stay in Launceston and do day trips to see the above, or stay somewhere like Beauty Point and include a day trip to Launceston??

Also - can anyone recommend any great caravan parks in these areas?

Thanks so much!!

Cheers :)

You'll have a much greater choice of accommodation and eateries in Launceston.

And it's an easy day trip to Beauty Point/Beaconsfield.

There are several caravan parks worth looking at. Launceston Holiday Park at Legana is probably the best of those in/near the city. Treasure Island is dead average.

Up north, we have stayed at Greens Beach, but food options - other than the adjacent general store - are non-existent. Beauty Point is right on the water - but again, there are few food choices. And there's another one at Kelso Sands.

Also look at Discovery Holiday Park at nearby Hadspen. It's pretty good.

If you are staying in the North I would recommend heading up to Bridport, Scottsdale and the North East. Beautiful beaches at Bridport and a few good pubs and takeaways for food (best fish and chips in tassie) and Scottsdale has a free camping site. From there you can even head down straight to the East Coast.
