Hi Melissa, it's me again. That was a short trip from Mt Cook to Te Anau.
As we've already established, romantic depends more on who you are with than on where you are, but here is the low down on accommodation in Te Anau.
There are basically three types of accommodation in Te Anau. The most populat is Motels, of which there are about 22-23. Prices range from $90 to $200 for two persons. Generally you get what you pay for, either a better view, better quality, or both.
B&B , Home Stay, and Farm Stay are the next most common. There are about 10 of these. These tend not to be cheap, often the same as motels, or sometimes more.
There are 4 hotels in Te Anau. Colectively these provide more beds that all the rest of the accommodation combined. They tend to concentrate on group tours, but will take anything they can get. Prices range from $100 - $150 per person. Hotels also have bars and restaurants, which other accommodation does not have.
There are also a few backpackers hostels, and 3 motor parks, for camper vans & tents etc.
Of the Motels, there are only three which are true lakefront properties. Lakeside Motel, Campbell AutoLodge, and Radford's Lakefront Motel. Te Anau Lakeview Holiday Park also has4 star units with good lake views. Some motels on Lakefront Drive have the units at 90 degrees to the road, and do not have full lake views. You should check the TA ratings on Te Anau motels and make your choice from there.
The overnight cruise is fabulous, andif you want romantic, this would be my choice. Go on either the Milford Mariner (Milford Sound), or the Fiordland Navigator(Doubtfull Sound). The Mariner is all en suite cabins, either double or twin, or family. The Navigator has both en suite cabins, and bunk rooms for back packers, so be sure you choose the en suite cabins, otherwise you will share your romantic interlude with 40 of the great unwashed.
Have a read of Zappers compilation of what to see & do at Milford Sound. This girl should write a book, in fact she almost already has.
