Driving from Fox Glacier to Wanaka

We will be touring the South Island in a 6 berth motorhome during Sept/Oct and have been told to be careful driving on the road from Fox Glacier to Haast. Can you please give us some insight as to what to expect? Is the road icy at this time of year?

the only trouble with the road is that you may sufer an overdose of scenery.

issues to be cautous about is many singe one lane bridges, winding road, people failing to keep left, no shoulder to the left of the road, no service stations, and no people.

make sure you have a full tank of fuel when you leave wanaka, you can fuel up at Haast, or at Fox.

From fox to Christchurch, the road is similar till you are through to Hokitika, then you have Arthurs Pass to ch-ch which has simmilar issues

The road shouldn't be icy. I guess you were advised caution as the road can be narrow in places, is twisty, a couple of places are steep, there are about 20 one-lane bridges between Franz and Wanaka and there are tourists driving the road.

Some drivers have a habit of driving on the wrong side of the road, failing to give way at one lane bridges and stopping in the middle of one lane bridges, or the middle of the road, to get out of the vehicle to take photos!

So yes, do take care. The drive is gorgeous, there are lots of places to stop and explore.

Safe travels :)

Hello,

We travelled this route in a 6 berth Motorhome in November...no problems at all....the roads actually weren't as steep as I had imagined but the scenery was out of this world.....we left the glaciers shrouded in jungle mist, arrived at the west coast bathed in sunshine and glassy blue oceans, travelled up through snow capped mountains with fields covered in sheep (of course), lambs and wildflowers and stopped at a few waterfalls and the blue pools before being blown away the the drive along the lakes leading into Wanaka....it was scenery overload for a days drive!

Enjoy, pace yourself, take time to stop and visit the sights and give way on the one lane bridges which are a novelty for us Queenslanders!
