Is Christchurch worth it??

I am wondering whether it's worthwhile going to Christchurch???

About me:

I am almost 19 years old, from south australia, study journalism in uni, aspire to be a doctor and/or travel writer, love going to gigs, drinking a beer or good red wine, meeting new people, relaxing, and adventure. I'm big into culture- trying new foods, meeting locals and enjoying good atmosphere. I'm not a full on hike person and couldn't bungy jump. I don't like clubbing- the idea of a bunch of drunk scantilly dressed bodies rubbing up against each other scares me.

The plan:

I might go around easter or mid year (June) when i get some uni holidays. I'd take a friend with me and we would most likely want cheap, but CLEAN and SAFE accommodation. Either a nice hostel or motel type of thing. I'd prob only stay for about week.

Do you think I should go, if so any reccommendations on where to stay/what to do?

Worth going......Sacrilege Beth lol!!!

Hey Christchurch is a cool city but it is not a Sydney!!

It has a great restaurant culture and surrounding wine district. Try a Canterbury Pinot Noir Yum! A good springboard for adventure activities in the South Island.

Try the Dux de Lux as a cool place to hang out with live music, friendly locals (lots of students) right in town.

June Hmmm take your thermals lol but hey the mountains are only a couple of hours away and winter is the best time to go there!

well thank you! that was very inspiring. i don't mind a good pinot!

i think i'd be after some wine tours, a couple of gigs, few nice eats, some nice scenic places- take some photos etc.

on a budget tho, of course!

any more info is greatly appreciated!

Try this restaurant our all time favourite in ChCh and a wine cellar to die for;

A trip to Akoroa penninsula is a must and if your budget can stretch to hit go a a dolphin watching tour. The dolphins (Hectors) here are very cute, very small and very unique they are seen anywhere else (by tour groups)

Check out the penguins at the Antatic Centre;

Maybe a night at Hanmer Springs Thermal resort- lots of walks hot pools and jet boating. (maybe tie that in with your wine tour (re your other post), Waipara is just south of Hanmer)

And right in the centre of town-

You could also do a day trip on the Trans-Alpine express to the West Coast for some spectacular scenery.

there are also a number of beaches you can visit close to the city for a bit of beach-combing.

And last but not least take a trip up the gondola for spectacular 360degree views over the city to the alps and over Akaroa Peninsula.

Hi there Beth,

We are an older couple(late 50's) but young in spirit.We spent 3 days in Christchurch and found plenty to do.

The Antarctic Centre would be good fun for you especially if you take the Hagglund ride.

For sheer beauty,get out to Akaroa on the peninsula.

Dux de Lux was really swinging when we went on a Friday night.

If you are into art there is an excellent art gallery.

The Arts Centre Many small boutique style craft shops and stalls outside with street theatre/music

Hope this is of some help

I thought Christchurch was very pretty although of all the cities I've visited in NZ it would probably be lower down the list than most. The Antarctic Centre was cool ( in both senses of the word)Cathedral square was lovely but the Avon River was a disappointment ( it looks so big on the travel shows!).

It actually reminded me a bit of Adelaide.
