Natural High bike rental on Little River Rail Trail?

Has anyone used Natural High bike rentals or another company to do a part-day tour of the Little River Rail Trail, ending in Little River with transport back to Christchurch? Is this trail a good choice for getting the blood flowing again the day after a flight from San Francisco (in December), before heading out for a car trip around the South Island?

I haven't used Natural High rentals, but the Little River Trail is a nice gentle cycle ride with quite a bit of bird life. It is very flat, but can be susceptible to winds. It would be good to stretch the legs and get fresh air after a long flight.

"Is this trail a good choice for getting the blood flowing"

Depends what you riding preferences are. The trail is very flat most of the way and so quite an easy ride. The landscape around Lake Ellesmere is also quite flat and (personal opinions) bland. It is a brackish coastal riparian marshland. The bike trail itself is well formed and maintained. It is well away from road traffic etc.

Lake Ellesmere is home to an abundance of wildlife. It is also one of the most heavily polluted (farm effluence) lakes in South Island. There are regular warnings to locals reminding them of toxic algal blooms etc.

(It even has its own secret US HAARP/CEDAR [High-frequency Active Auroral Research Project] base at Birdling Flats, but shhh..... don't tell anyone. Conspiracy theorists link the base to chemtrails and creating earthquakes?!)

There are numerous bike trails through Christchurch with fairly easy riding. Through Hagley Park and various routes alongside the Avon. Coastal trails between New Brighton and Spencers Beach. Following link has cycle maps and other resources.

If you are after something more vigorous, there is a whole heap of mountain biking and road cycling trails up in the Port Hills between Christchurch and Lyttleton. Some of the roads such as Summit Road are closed due to earthquake damage. However they are actively used by hundreds of people every week end. Great city and sea views. Not for the faint of heart though.

(Note, following is a direct link to pdf download of cycle map. Use Google's Quick View to look without downloading)

Advantage of these trails is that you could reach them by bike without needing the car transport link. As you have probably found already, there are numerous bike hire companies in Christchurch listed on Google.

Hope this helps. Happy Trails
