A lot depends on if you want to spend time doing things along the way.

christchurch to Greymouth allow about 4 hours

Greymouth to Christchurch via hanmer allow about 5 hours

There are hot pools at Maruia near the top of Lewis pass, if you dont have time at Hanmer

remember to stop occasionaly like every 2 hours or so for a break.

check out the Kea's at Deaths Corner which is a viewing observation place over looking the viaduct on Arthur's Pass (dont let them eat too much of your car)

the road is in good condition, sealed all the way, but it is not a motorway so be careful as it crosses three alpine passes

Where from? If you are thinking from Christchurch it's a good 4 hours to Greymouth and going back on the 7 takes even longer. Why would you want to do it in 1 day?

Take the train instead so you'll take in the scenery. 10 hour driving trip is way too much.

If you have only 1 day available from Chc, go somewhere closer.
