Welcome to the Forum, Des.

Your itinerary looks good with one proviso. Unless you are really keen on doing the star-gazing tour at Mt John, there isn't much to be gained by staying overnight at Lake Tekapo. To me it is a toilet stop on the way to Mt Cook. Two nights at Mt Cook would be more relaxing. Don't miss the well signed detour via the Mt Cook salmon farm about 10km south of Tekapo.

Hi Des :)

Another vote for two nights Aoraki/Mt Cook - far more scenic than Tekapo.

And rather than stay at Hokitika, why not keep driving a bit further and stay at Punakaiki? - it's a great drive and the pancake rocks are interesting - best seen at high tide - in a storm!

You have a nice route planned, enjoy :)
